What is “The Avid Administrator”?

Hello Technology Enthusiast.

My name is Tanuki and this is my newsletter The Avid Administrator. The goal of this newsletter is teach you the concepts I wish I knew when I started out in IT.

But I’ll be upfront. I’m still early in my career…so why listen to me?

Because my experience is unique. I have <5 years of full time experience, but I have:

  • Become the head of IT for a small business growing at 35%+ per year

  • Have the Net+ and Sec+ certifications. I have provisionally passed the CISSP exam.

  • Written a 20k+ word system security plan for CMMC compliance

  • and more…

I went to college to learn Information Systems, but the degree was useless. I already knew how to use the terminal, could automate, and manage systems. The higher education system sucks, so I’m doing my part to share things I’ve learned.

Everything I’ve done I’ve self taught myself through googling, learning on the job, and going through paid courses. I will pass on things I found helpful and recommend tools and courses I believe in.

I am not an expert hacker. I haven’t made 200k+ year being a CISO. I haven’t sold a SaaS for millions of dollars. All I am is a guy interested in fast tracking his career, building cool shit, and helping out people along the way. I hope you’ll stick around if that sounds cool to you.

I intend to stay anonymous. So how do you know I’m not a lying bastard? My content won’t suck.

So here’s my offer to you:

I will give you weekly newsletters about things I wish I knew when I started and what I am actively learning as I build a small business’s IT and security program in real time.

You get this for free. All I ask in return is that you share the newsletter if something I wrote helped you. You could share it with a friend, a coworker, or even your mom.

I also want to make something clear about how I work.

I am a young IT professional. I am writing for those a few steps behind me to get them up to speed quicker.

Call me out if I say something wrong, slip up, or you know a better way to do something. I don’t really give a fuck about being wrong. I just want be better.

I hope you do too. Otherwise you shouldn’t be here.

I’ll see you in the newsletter.

Cheers,

Tanuki

Became the IT lead of a small biz before I had 5 years of experience. My job requires me to build an IT infrastructure for a business with 800-171/CMMC and ITAR requirements. Everything I share is what I'm actively learning and what I wish I knew.
